Elena and Carlito: Ticket to Laughter

Luxembourg Pride is in full swing, but I find myself spending time with family back home instead of partaking in the festivities. Rather than suggesting an event, I’d like to introduce you to something equally delightful: Carlito’s Comedy Club, the only Stand-Up Comedy club in Luxembourg.

I absolutely love attending comedy shows there – they’re my ultimate escape from the pressures of university life. It’s a cosy little club tucked away near Luxembourg’s main train station. The atmosphere will transport you to a scene straight out of a hilarious TikTok video of a comedian picking on their audience. With its warm lighting, an inviting bar, and friendly staff, everything about this place is crafted to make sure you feel at ease and right at home.

You might be curious as to why I am recommending a comedy club during Pride Week and what sets it apart. Well, Carlito’s isn´t just a fantastic spot for a delightful first date during Pride, it’s also the place where my absolute favourite comedian, Elena Gabrielle, performs her queer-friendly shows! This Australian-born gem makes me cry with laughter when she, fittingly enough, rants about all her dating misadventures.

Even though some time has passed since I first told you about me being single, I am still on the lookout for a boyfriend! So, I can totally relate to the experiences she shares. From wild nights with ‘vegan’ wine to dating a super efficient German who can undress and fold his clothes in 30 seconds, Elena has seen it all! I’ve been attending her shows for a few years now, and I’m thrilled to say that we’ve developed a great friendship. Our little chats and inside jokes always brighten my day!

The first time I attended her show, I was on a date with a guy who had a deep love for olives. Surprisingly, this ended up being the running joke throughout Elena’s show. From that point on, he was called the “olive guy.” At the following show, it was a hilarious relief for everyone that the relationship had ended; apparently, love for olives can turn out to be a deal breaker… at least if a comedian keeps cracking jokes about it.

During one of Elena’s performances, all in relationships, myself included, ended up sitting in the front row, creating a very clear divide between the taken and the single audience members. Given that Elena was single too, you can imagine how we got teased all night long. She was so hilarious that one guy couldn’t stop laughing, and she had to pause her joke to let him catch his breath!

What has made me always feel safe and welcome at her shows is also that she is an active member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Everyone is welcome in her world. Plus, she understands that our community has some of the most epic dating tales, so you know she’s going to share those wild and funny stories on stage.

Moreover, Elena is not only an incredible comedian but also a talented singer! Her vocal performance adds an extra layer of enjoyment to her shows, making them truly unforgettable. Not to mention her stunning outfits, glamorous heels, and fabulous glitter penis-earrings in multiple dazzling colours! She knows how to wow the audience in every way possible! I really believe that there is something for everyone to enjoy at her shows. 

Although I’m not typically one to burst into laughter at comedy shows, Elena´s are always a blast. Each time, I leave her sets with aching abs, because yes, laughing can be a legit workout. Furthermore, I eagerly wait in line—or more accurately, sit— to snap a photo with her and continue our cherished tradition. Over the years, we’ve collected quite a few selfies, and each one brings me immense happiness. 

I can’t sing Elena´s praises enough! I am already looking forward to seeing her at Carlito’s for another hilarious show. The club is totally wheelchair-accessible and the vibe is simply unbeatable. I’m thrilled to shine a spotlight on this incredible find. The club features performances in various languages, so there’s something to captivate everyone. It’s truly special.
